Where to get your rocks off this weekend

thisweekendaugust28.JPGIs it still only Thursday? Really? Sigh. Well, whatever, here's where to head this weekend for your live music fix. And by weekend, I mean Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights - just because.

If you haven't made it down to Not Me's Indie Heart Attack night yet, tonight's might just be the one to go to. My reasoning is fourfold:
1) Ben Houge is doing a live set, should be rocking.
2) Friend of the blog Archie Hamilton (whose excellent China Music Radar site just got a rather fetching makeover) will be guesting as a DJ.
3) Sacco and Wongton will be filling the gaps in between with their usual class.
4) Next week's one is going to see a sharp drop in quality as they're letting a certain local music blogger loose on the wheels of steel. Yikes.
>>> Free. Tonight, 9pm-ish, Not Me,
21 Dongping Lu, near Hengshan Lu (东平路21号,近衡山路)

For something a little different, folk group 如是我闻 (Ru Shi Wo Wen),  will be celebrating ten years over at Yuyintang with support from KE.
>>> ¥40. Tonight, 9pm, YYT, 1731 Yan'an Xi Lu (entrance on Kaixuan Lu), 延安西路1731号 (入口在凯旋路)

Friday night sees an east side-west side showdown. Sort of. The East District Power collective are heading into town to takeover the new(ish) Live Bar on Weihai Lu. They're a collective of artists, poets and singers from the east of Shanghai that spans "west from Hongkou, east to Zhongyuan, no further south than Huangxing Park and no further north than Jiangwan".
>>> ¥30. Friday, 8pm, Live Bar, Room 103, Building 11, 696 Weihai Lu, 威海路696弄11号103近茂名路

West side is represented by Sonnet and Sun Ye, reuniting to play some Michael Jackson covers at Yuyintang's tribute night to the King of Pop. Also there will be Joker and all are part of Lezi's recently founded Western Suburbs collective, that also features Pinkberry. Here's what Lezi says about it:
"It includes the bands or musicians or artists,who grow/live/work/study in the west suburbia of shanghai. and deeply influnced by that place. 西郊 includes Jiading district (which is famous for its Auto industry and F1 circle),Songjiang district (songjiang university town now has 8 colleges, result in many college band) and Qingpu district (famous for the old town Zhujiajiao). i grew up in a small village in Jiading and our family even has cropland when i was a little boy. so i think people grow up of live in that place have something in common,cause we didnt' grow up in an commercial environment"
Tian Pin Dian and their new lineup will be paying tribute to Jacko too.
>>> ¥40. Friday, 9pm, YYT, 1731 Yan'an Xi Lu (entrance on Kaixuan Lu), 延安西路1731号 (入口在凯旋路)

Torturing Nurse are joined by an impressive assortment of European and Asian noise artists up at Yangpu's Live Bar as NOIShanghai takes place on a Friday night this month. Brilliantly named artists such as Kylie Minoise and Orgasm Denial are on the bill together with Rashad Becker, Hongqile, Kouhei Matsunaga and the somewhat legendary Hiroshi Hasegawa. If you're a noise fan, this show is a pretty big deal.
>>> ¥50. Friday, 9pm, Live Bar 721 Kunming Lu, near Tongbei Lu, 昆明路721号近通北路

Saturday sees local rockers Five Pence and Shanghainese comedy rock band Lightninger joined by metalheads Cherry Cheerleaders down on Weihai Lu for little Live Bar's End of the Crazy Summer Party.
>>> ¥30. Friday, 8pm, Live Bar, Room 103, Building 11, 696 Weihai Lu, 威海路696弄11号103近茂名路

Yuguo head up Britpop night at Yuyintang meanwhile, with 8MG, Rank, Ann and Fading Cross in support. A few people have asked me about this so, to clarify, as I understand it this is a night of Britpop bands as in the genre - they're not going to be throwing down Oasis covers and the like all night (at least, I hope not).
>>> ¥40. Saturday, 9pm, YYT, 1731 Yan'an Xi Lu (entrance on Kaixuan Lu), 延安西路1731号 (入口在凯旋路)

And finally Tian Pin Dian and Five Pointed Star are the bands to watch if you fancy heading to Kunming Lu for your Saturday night live music pickings.
>>> ¥30. Saturday, 9pm, Live Bar 721 Kunming Lu, near Tongbei Lu, 昆明路721号近通北路

Don't say I didn't tell you.
