Shanghai Music Scene: July 2011 Archives
Hopefully you still keep an eye on both sites, but this is just a reminder that if things are a little slow here, there's always this blog to turn to. Yep, Mr Best is back blogging again and there's been a flurry of activity on those pages. It's partly because I'm getting a lot busier with my day job and partly because he's worried I'm closing in on his post numbers (this one brings me to 450 I think, with my two year Kungfuology anniversary in a couple of weeks).
It's a big weekend this weekend and, having started with KITE and Next Year's Love at LOgO last night, Andy is planning to hit up most of the gigs taking place. Here's where you can find him, and probably me too, though Saturday night is difficult call and we might end up at different gigs. Oh the suspense....
Yeah, yeah, I know you're all going to Macy Gray at M1NT, but I thought I'd mention this in case you get turned away at the door - they're pretty strict on the old dress code there. The good people at Split Works launch their Wooozy Sessions this Thursday at Yuyintang, a new initiative to bring non-Shanghai bands to the city who might not otherwise make it here. The gigs will be once a month and they're also going to be splitting the money made on the door between the bands and a charitable cause.
Which all sounds very nice, but doesn't mean too much if they haven't got decent bands to back it up. Well, they have - this week's inaugural session welcomes Mr Graceless back to town, for their first appearance at Yuyintang. They'll be joined by Forsaken Autumn.
So yeah, Mr Graceless + Forsaken Autumn at Yuyintang this Thursday. It'll cost you just 30RMB to get in, starts at 8pm and your money will be going to good causes. For more on Mr Graceless, click here; listen to Forsaken Autumn here; read the official Split Works blurb on the events here; Wooozy.cn is here of course; and you can find out more about Shiyi Gongyi, this month's charity cause, right here.
Friday night saw the last fundraiser for DJ BO's Rock Naadam tour of Mongolia, held at LOgO. The three bands who will be heading from Shanghai to UB all played - The Horde (Ho-Tom and Franco), Moon Tyrant and Boys Climbing Ropes - there was a good turn out and it was a good night.
DJ BO has done a sterling job getting the whole thing organised and has been promoting the hell out of it up in Mongolia. He's got radio spots (see after the jump), billboard posters and all sorts. The bands head to Beijing this Wednesday, from where they'll be taking flights to Mongolia. They'll then be playing in UB and Darkhan over the period of Naadam. It's all massively exciting and I for one wish I was going with them.
Anyway, in addition to the gigs, BO has been doing plenty of promotion here in Shanghai too to help raise funds and that includes a spot on ICS. If you click here, then go to Saturday 2 and 'Shanghai Live', you'll find a bit on the trip with interviews with some of those involved about 12 minutes 30 seconds in. Check it out.
